Total Solar Eclipse, Antalya 2006. |
|
Although the eclipse will be viewable from the coastal resorts
of Belek and Kemer, the best view of totality will be near Side. During
totality (the period during an eclipse when the sky is completely dark)
the brightest object in the sky will be Venus; seen on the map of the
sky during the eclipse below: ![]()
The solar eclipse will hit shortly before 1:00 pm Turkish time
and last nearly four minutes. Antalya will be probably one of the best
places in the world to view because of the climate at that time, and
the prevailing wind from the northwest, which helps to clear the skies
of cloud. The path taken by the shadow of the moon over the earth can
be seen in the figure below: ![]()
Turkey won’t see another total solar eclipse until 2060. The
next comparable total solar eclipse in Europe will be in 2026. You are
advised to make an early hotel reservation.
Under no circumstances should you try to
view a solar eclipse with the naked eye and ESPECIALLY a camera. You
will suffer permanent eye damage and possibly turn blind
if you do not use special equipment that avoids looking directly into
sunlight. We cannot stress this strongly enough!!!! If you need help trying to get a last minute hotel booking,
