Total Solar Eclipse, Antalya 2006.

Antalya Solar eclipse viewAround 1 million visitors are expected to visit the Mediterranean resort of Antalya in Turkey to witness the total solar eclipse on March 29th 2006.

The shadow of the moon will move in a line 165 km wide at a speed of over 3,000 km an our across Turkey. The best view of the eclipse will be from the region covering Antalya to Alanya, but for the best view tourists will flock to the coastal resort of Manavgat near Side.

Although the eclipse will be viewable from the coastal resorts of Belek and Kemer, the best view of totality will be near Side. During totality (the period during an eclipse when the sky is completely dark) the brightest object in the sky will be Venus; seen on the map of the sky during the eclipse below:

The solar eclipse will hit shortly before 1:00 pm Turkish time and last nearly four minutes. Antalya will be probably one of the best places in the world to view because of the climate at that time, and the prevailing wind from the northwest, which helps to clear the skies of cloud. The path taken by the shadow of the moon over the earth can be seen in the figure below:

Turkey won’t see another total solar eclipse until 2060. The next comparable total solar eclipse in Europe will be in 2026. You are advised to make an early hotel reservation.

If you can’t find accommodation in Antalya, you can see it from the HRC webcam:

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Under no circumstances should you try to view a solar eclipse with the naked eye and ESPECIALLY a camera. You will suffer permanent eye damage and possibly turn blind if you do not use special equipment that avoids looking directly into sunlight.

We cannot stress this strongly enough!!!!
